Copyblogger and Why Your Writing Ability Matters

Copyblogger is a great writing advice website I’ve discovered recently. It’s focused on advice for crafting effective business and marketing copy online, and I’ve found most of the articles to be wonderful, insightful and absolutely worth reading for anyone whose job is meaningfully intertwined with writing.

What’s that you say? “I dunno Mike. Sales, marketing or product tips? Sure. But writing? That’s not really in my job description.” Are you sure?

Do you write press releases? Newsletters to clients? What about social networking? More and more, are you finding yourself depending on e-mail to express important information or persuade clients?

If any of the above are true, then you should be checking Copyblogger daily (or at least subscribed to the site via your RSS reader). If you’re overwhelmed by all the material on Copyblogger, here are a couple articles I particularly liked:

The truth is that it’s becoming much more common for businesses of all sizes to be engaged in written marketing online, so your writing ability is going to start mattering a lot more when trying to promote your business. And just like with any other form of marketing, it’s not just what you’re putting out there, but how well you execute the intended message, which is why sites like Copyblogger can be such a big help. They won’t make you Seth Godin overnight, but can help you make your online copy as clear and engaging as possible, which is more than enough to put you on your way.

Until next time!

WEEKLY MIKE FACT: I’m currently reading a book called “The English Major” which so far seems to have very little to do with its title. It’s actually about a 58-year-old farmer from Michigan who goes on a state-by-state journey to reconnect with himself and escape the pain of his recent divorce. Lots of first-person stream of consciousness mixed with a rural simplicity that’s been real pleasant and smooth going into my brain so far. I suppose it’s too soon to make an official Mike-endorsement, but I will say I’m enjoying it so far.
